On the Translation Methods of the Social Folk Culture in English Translation Version of Narrative Poem Ashima

Abstract: The narrative poem Ashima literarily displays the deep traditional culture of the Sani people. The poem contains a great number of social folk culture-loaded words. In virtue of corpus research,the paper analyzes the translation methods of the social folk culture in the English translation version of narrative poem Ashima by Gladys Yang. It is found that the translator does her utmost to transfer the unique marriage culture of the Sani people and the literary features of the source text,and also tries to improve the readability of translation by the translation methods of substitution or omission in dealing with some social folk culture-loaded words, which are not necessary to the Western readers' understanding of the target language.
