Abstract: With the popularity of the novel Lost Horizon by James Hilton during the 20th century all over the world, Shangri-la, an image of paradise created in the novel, is well-known too. Yunnan has attracted more and more attention since one of the counties of Yunnan changed its name into Shangri-la according to the description of the location of it in the novel. Shangri-la somehow becomes the image of Yunnan, even the image of China. In fact, through the analysis of the novel, Shangri-la conveys the European dream and reflects their complex feelings to China since the masters of the paradise are the European and the local people are only Others in the novel.
