The Contrail of Ugliness —— On the Bosanquet’s historical combination of Ugliness and motivation

Abstract

Abstract: “Ugliness” is an important category of aesthetic. With the change of the times, the relationship between beauty and ugliness has changed. Bosanquet’s History of Aesthetics is the first monograph of Westerners to systematically study aesthetic thoughts, which using aesthetic theory as a clue to explore the development of aesthetic consciousness. In History of Aesthetics,Bosanquet consciously listed “Ugliness” as the key research object.Through sorting out the history of “Ugliness” from Greek classical aesthetics to modern aesthetic,he found that some ugliness and Beauty can be in dialectical unity. This article takes it as breakthrough point and analyses Bosanquet’s motivation for the historical combination on “Ugliness” through three angles of romantic aesthetics, Hegel’s dialectical view and Bosanquet’s historical spirit, and then explore his appreciation ugliness and aesthetic spirit.
