The Magistrate’s Heroic Complex in Waiting for the Barbarians from the Perspective of “Complex Theory”

Abstract: Hero is the embodiment of the positive energy of a society and human beings’ worship of the hero is derived from the inner “heroic complex”. The Magistrate in the South African writer J.M. Coetzee’s work: Waiting for the Barbarians is such kind of person who has strong “heroic complex”. Using Jung’s “Complex Theory” to analyze the Magistrate’s “heroic complex” can not only understand his “weird behaviors” to the “barbarians”, but also get a better understanding of “heroic complex”.
