Abstract: The philanthropic tradition inherent in the copper merchants’ culture of Huize possesses unique historical value and cultural significance.Relying on the prosperity of the copper merchant economy, Huize established a four-fold charitable network comprising the government, the local community, industry, and guild halls during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Huize County has demonstrated both the ethical spirit of “benefiting society through commerce” and the logic behind the construction of a “local community” through philanthropic practices such as the establishment of charitable schools, poverty relief, and local development. The philanthropic activities of Huize’s copper merchant culture have both carried forward the traditional Chinese concepts of charity.Driven by commercial economy, they also developed unique organizational models and practical approaches.With the passage of time, traditional forms of philanthropy have undergone modern transformation and reorganization, providing valuable historical references for the development of contemporary public welfare.
